The Rebel (2007) [Vietnamese: Dòng Máu Anh Hùng] is a Vietnamese martial arts film directed by Charlie Nguyen and starring Johnny Nguyen, Dustin Nguyen. According to Johnny, finding the right actress to play the female lead was very difficult and the part finally went to Veronica Ngo.
In The Rebel (2007), France employs local secret agents in 1922 Vietnam so they can eliminate any resistance. The rebel leader’s pretty daughter gets captured and when one of the secret agents falls in love with her, he decides to help her escape and then flees with her. There is lots of martial arts in this film.
The cast and crew of The Rebel (2007) shot for 80 days in Vietnam, where the local film industry was still in development and where the cultural officers monitored the production’s every move, making filming much more difficult. They also had other obstacles such as sick crew members and injured actors.
Parts of the film, mainly street scenes in the first half of the film, were shot in the old port town of Hội An (standing in for Hanoi).
The Rebel (2007) premiered on April 12, 2007 at the Vietnamese International Film Festival in Irvine, California. It was released on April 27, 2007 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and played as the Closing Night film at the 2007 VC FilmFest in Los Angeles.
