Dr. Z is a martial artist, actor, film director, healer and educator who was born and raised in China. He began his martial arts at the age of 5, training with his grandfather. Beginning in his teen years, he grew up practicing Tai Chi Chuan, Wing Chun, Choy Li Fat, Northern Shaolin and was a NCAA boxer in college.
Moving to the United States, he began studying Jeet Kune Do in 1982, training under two first generation JKD masters – Sifu Dan Inosanto (1982-1989, IMB Academy, Torrance) and Sifu Ted Wong (1982-1992, Monterey Park), where he was a classmate of the late Brandon Lee.
Dr. Z is knowledgeable in both original Jeet Kune Do and JKD concepts and has also fought full contact bouts out of the Jet Center.
Dr. Z is also trained in the medical arts and has been the personal doctor of martial arts King of Kata, Master Eric Lee, of professional wrestler, pro boxer and martial artist, Professor Toru Tanaka, of Grand Master Sin Kwang The and of Grand Master Ed Parker.
After attending UCLA film school classes for most of the 1990s, Dr. Z decided to take on the challenge of continuing the art and legacy of Jeet Kune Do movies originated by JKD founder and Grand Master Bruce Lee. Dr. Z began a film company called Reel Asian Films (JKD Films) and has successfully produced thirteen feature films to date.
In addition to training, Dr. Z has also served as a JKD instructor for close to 30 years, establishing academies in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. He still enjoys sharing his knowledge on both the training and philosophies of Jeet Kune Do.
